Plants of the month: July

You may remember from the introduction to May's section, the 9 sacred trees (Birch, Rowan, Ash, Alder, Willow, Hawthorn, Oak, Holly and Hazel), linked to the Celtic festivals of the Wheel of the Year.

When researching Yarrow for July's plants I came across another group of 9 plants: the 9 sacred herbs of the Anglo Saxons. These peoples came to Britain after the Celts (for a refresher on this piece of our history, take a look at this video) and many of their practices influence Paganism today.

The 9 sacred herbs are: Camomile (Matricaria chamomilla), Nettle (Urtica dioica), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris), Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), Plantain (Plantago major), Watercress (Nasturtium officinale), Chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium) and, possibly, Cockspur Grass (Echinochloa crus-galli). Some believe that the latter was instead Betony (Stachys officinalis). (Source and further reading here).
The Herb Almanac also states that Yarrow* is one of the 9 sacred herbs, and we'll be looking more closely at her and Greater Plantain this month.

July's plants are:
Bilberry
Greater Plantain
Lady's Bedstraw
Meadowsweet
Red clover
Rosebay Willowherb
Wild raspberry
Yarrow

Update on Yarrow: according to this source, she was not in fact one of the Anglo Saxon nine sacred herbs. So plantain is the only one for this month's plants.
